# Plain Text Version

## Overview

Grav 2.1's native Markdown output, together with the Sitemap plugin (5.3.0+), can publish your reader content as a structured plain-text file — a single URL that always reflects current content, readable by people and tools alike. This is useful for:

- **Open access** — share one stable link to all reader content in a portable, format-neutral form
- **Ebook generation** — use `/llms-full.txt` as input for tools like [Pandoc](https://pandoc.org/) to produce EPUB, DOCX, or PDF output
- **Search and indexing** — machine-readable content that any tool can consume without parsing HTML
- **Compatible with AI tools** — the plain text format can be read by AI tools if instructors or students choose to use them

When enabled, two endpoints are served from your site root:

| Endpoint | Contents |
|---|---|
| `/llms.txt` | Site title, description, and a linked index of all included pages with their descriptions |
| `/llms-full.txt` | Everything in `/llms.txt` plus the full Markdown content of each page |

## Enabling the Feature

These endpoints are generated by Grav core and the Sitemap plugin, not by Helios Open Reader. To turn them on:

1. Confirm **Markdown Output** is enabled under **Admin → Configuration → System → Content** (on by default in Grav 2.1+).
2. Go to **Admin → Plugins → Sitemap** and toggle **Serve llms-full.txt** on.

Once enabled, both endpoints are immediately available at your site's root URL.

 Note

`/llms-full.txt` is disabled by default in the Sitemap plugin. No endpoint is served until you turn it on there.

## Footer Link

Helios Open Reader can show a **Plain text version** link in the page footer, pointing visitors at `/llms-full.txt`. Go to **Admin → Plugins → Helios Open Reader → Plain Text Version Link** to turn it on:

- **Show Plain Text Version Link in Footer** — disabled by default; turn it on to show the link (also requires **Serve Per-Publication llms-full.txt** on multi-publication sites, or the Sitemap plugin's **Serve llms-full.txt** setting on single-publication sites)
- **Plain Text Version Link Label** and **Plain Text Version Link Icon** — customise the link's text and icon

 Tip

Shortcodes and Twig content run before the Markdown is produced, so `/llms-full.txt` contains rendered content, not literal shortcode syntax like `<div class="md-alert md-alert--note hor-definition"><p class="md-alert-title"> Definition</p><div class="md-alert-body">…</div></div>`.

## Multi-Publication Sites

On a site like this one, with more than one reader listed on the readers home page, Sitemap's `/llms-full.txt` is site-wide — it merges every reader into a single file, which usually isn't what you want when a visitor is reading one specific book.

Helios Open Reader can answer each reader's own `/<publication>/llms-full.txt` instead. Turn on **Serve Per-Publication llms-full.txt** and **Show Plain Text Version Link in Footer** (both in **Admin → Plugins → Helios Open Reader → Plain Text Version Link**), and the footer link uses that per-publication file whenever it's viewed from inside a reader. Sitemap's site-wide `/llms-full.txt` (if also enabled) is untouched and still available separately at the site root.

 Note

This only applies to multi-publication sites. A single-publication site has nothing to disambiguate, so its footer link always uses Sitemap's site-wide file.
